Colectivo Tz’aqat: Ja toq a majon waiim ma utz ta nab’iij ja ra wachiik
La Casa del Lago UNAM presents "Ja toq a majon waiim ma utz ta nab’iij ja ra wachiik’ / Los sueños no se cuentan cuando estamos comiendo," an exhibition that intertwines art, healing, and resistance through the Maya Tz’utujil worldview.
Coming from San Pedro la Laguna, Guatemala, artists Cheen Cortez (1983) and Manuel Chavajay (1982) present their first exhibition as Tz’aqat in Mexico, a collective practice based on support, collaboration, and balance. Through their works, they explore cultural preservation, lineage, and memory in the face of the historical violence that has marked their people.
The exhibition guides us through the dreams of Cheen Cortez, recorded under the Maya lunar calendar. In these dreams, water and the grandmother Qawoq become voices of resistance, reminding us of the connection between nature, spirituality, and identity. From the shores of the lake to the clay jars, the grandmother remains alive, protecting her people despite ecological catastrophes and forgetfulness.
As part of the opening, the artists will meet with curator Eva Posas (MX) for an inaugural talk on Thursday, March 6 at 6:00 PM in the Sala Rosario Castellanos. A space for dialogue on the creative processes and the meaning of this exhibition.
Don’t miss this unique show that unites art and memory as a form of resistance.
